"We bought the online skip-the-line ticket to avoid the queue. The ride up to Montjuïc Castle is quick, but the views of the port are superb. The short journey is more than made up for by its absolute beauty."
"The Montjuïc Cable Car is a bit pricey for just a 6-minute ride, but the direct access to Poble Espanyol is convenient. I would have liked more time to admire the Sagrada Família from the cabins."
"In summer, we took advantage of the late-night opening until 9:00 PM. The sunset view over Barcelona was magical. We positioned our children on the fixed window side to get a better frame of the city."
"Note, do not confuse it with the Funicular! We had to wait 45 minutes at Avinguda Miramar station before boarding. Despite this wait, access to the Castle remains very useful for visiting the summit."
"The 2007 renovation transformed the experience. The glass cabins offer an unbeatable view of the Mercat de les Flors below. A smooth and modern ride that is worth every cent for the perfect photo."
"To reach the Greek Theatre, the cable car is ideal. The round-trip price seems high at first, but it's much cheaper than individual transport. The intermediate Mirador stop also offers some beautiful viewpoints."
"Traveling solo, I loved the tranquility of the Fundació Joan Miró, which is easily accessible after the descent. The cable car itself is short, but the aerial perspective of the harbor is unforgettable for a hurried tourist."
"The right-angle turn at Mirador station is technically impressive. We went on a weekday morning, so lines were short. It’s ideal for quickly reaching the National Art Museum of Catalonia without any physical effort."
"Cabins can be packed during peak season, which reduces comfort. However, the view of the Sagrada Família remains spectacular. Remember to check the weather, as service stops if the wind blows too hard."
"A tip: use the descent via Mirador de l'Alcalde. This intermediate station, inaccessible on the way up, allows you to take magnificent photos of the gardens. Overall organization is efficient and smooth."
"Perfect for seniors, you go up to the Castle without getting tired. The fixed windows allow you to clearly see the Magic Fountain illuminated in the evening. An essential detour in our Barcelona itinerary."
"The €17.10 fare is steep for such a brief trip. Moreover, the wait exceeded an hour on a summer Sunday. If you have time, the funicular or walking could be less costly alternatives despite the effort."

Year of full reconstruction
The Montjuïc Cable Car connects Miramar Avenue to the Castle via a 752-meter detachable gondola lift. Rebuilt in 2007, it offers a capacity of 2990 people per hour. This modern system replaced the old 1970 installation, now offering glass cabins accessible to all.
History and technical transformation
Inaugurated in 1970 by Von Roll, the first cable car featured 4-seat cabins without windows. This configuration required winter closures and excluded people with reduced mobility. The discomfort led to a complete overhaul of the infrastructure. The original line had 54 cabins on a route with an intermediate station serving three distinct points.
In 2007, the Italian company Leitner rebuilt the line to meet modern needs. The new cabins accommodate 8 passengers each and are equipped with fixed windows. This improvement doubled the flow capacity, from 1200 to 2990 people per hour. The system remains a detachable gondola lift managed by TMB, offering optimal comfort year-round.
The current route maintains two distinct sections of 430 and 320 meters. An angle of 86 degrees forces a change in direction without stopping for passengers. The cabins are automatically transferred to the second section, ensuring a smooth continuity of service. The total length extends over 752 meters with an elevation difference of 85 m.
Visual experience and viewpoints
The ascent offers an exceptional panoramic view of the Sagrada Família, Port Vell, and the Mediterranean Sea. The red cabins stand out with their modern design that perfectly frames the urban landscapes. It is the only way to quickly reach the optimal viewpoint without fatigue. You can also see the Camp Nou and the Magic Fountain from above.
The intermediate station Mirador de l'Alcalde, located at 129 meters altitude, is served only during the descent. There are no platforms for the ascent, which requires staying in the cabin until the summit. This technical feature allows automatic transfer of cabins without interruption. It marks the turn towards the Montjuïc Castle.
At the top, the upper station at 173 meters altitude provides direct access to the Montjuïc Castle and the Fossar de la Pedrera. The round-trip skip-the-line ticket is valid all day but does not include paid entry to the castle. Check the weather before leaving, as service may be suspended in case of strong winds or heavy rain to ensure passenger safety.
Distinction from the Funicular and access
It is crucial to distinguish the Montjuïc Cable Car (managed by TMB) from the Montjuïc Funicular. The Cable Car goes up to the castle from Miramar Avenue, while the Funicular only connects the Paral-lel station to the Park. Confusing these two installations can delay your visit, as they serve distinct points of interest on the hill.
The lower station is located on Miramar Avenue, to the left of the upper station of the Funicular. To avoid confusion, note that the Port Cable Car (Aeri del Port) is a different installation. The Montjuïc Cable Car is specifically designed for the ascent to the historic summit. It starts at 88 meters altitude near the Paral-lel metro.
In summer, from June to September, the service is open from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The adult round-trip fare starts at €17.10, with a 10% discount online. Children aged 4 to 12 years benefit from a reduced rate starting at €11.70. Online booking is recommended to enjoy skip-the-line access. In winter, early closure at 6:00 PM applies.

Tips for visiting the Montjuïc Cable Car
Insider tips
Check the weather before you go
The cable car closes in case of strong winds, which can impact your castle visit plan. Check local forecasts or the Hola Barcelona app on the morning of your visit to avoid disappointment due to unfavorable weather conditions.
Don't confuse it with the Funicular
If you want to reach the top of the castle, take the Cable Car from Miramar Avenue, not the Funicular from Paral-lel. The latter stops at park level and does not take you up to the historic citadel located higher up.
Position yourself by the fixed window
The cabins have fixed windows; position yourself to frame the Sagrada Família or the port depending on the direction of travel. This setup optimizes your photos without having to move constantly during the short aerial ride.
Enjoy the summer night opening
In summer (June-Sept), service runs until 9:00 PM, ideal for a sunset view of the city. This extended time slot allows you to capture the changing colors of the Mediterranean horizon and the first urban lights.
Buy the skip-the-line ticket online
Save 10% and avoid the queue at the lower station on Miramar Avenue. The round-trip skip-the-line ticket is valid all day, giving you the flexibility to go up and down multiple times if you wish.
Plan the descent via Mirador
Use the return trip to enjoy the intermediate Mirador station of the Alcalde, which is inaccessible on the way up. This unique stop allows you to take a photo break or observe the city from a different angle before heading back down the hill.
Ideal for tired families
Allows access to the summit without physical effort, perfect after a day of walking in Barcelona. Children will appreciate the playful experience of the ascent in a glass cabin, turning the journey into a true family attraction.
Understand the site's history
The summit houses the Fossar de la Pedrera, an important place of memory from the Spanish Civil War, accessible directly from the upper station. Take the time to read the explanatory plaques to understand the historical context of these emotionally charged sites.

Little-known anecdotes
Radical transformation in 2007
Inaugurated in 1970 by Von Roll, the old system closed in winter and had no glass. The complete reconstruction by Leitner in 2007 modernized the cabins with fixed windows, increasing capacity from 4 to 8 seats per unit.
The right-angle turn
The line describes a technical angle of 86° at the Mirador intermediate station, located at 129 m altitude. The cabins are automatically transferred to the second section without passengers needing to disembark.
A short but spectacular ascent
With only 752 meters in length and a low elevation gain of 85 meters, the ride creates a sensation of flight rather than transport. It is divided into two precise sections of 430 m and 320 m, allowing fluid and secure movement on the hill.
Direct access to places of memory
The upper Castell station, at an altitude of 173 m, offers immediate access to the Castle, the Fossar de la Pedrera, and the Montjuïc Cemetery, key sites of Spanish Civil War memory and historical places of remembrance.
Two distinct infrastructures
The Cable Car (TMB) connects Miramar Avenue to the Castle, while the Montjuïc Funicular is a separate facility located nearby. They are two distinct transport systems. Do not confuse it with the Port cable car which serves the port.
Massive flow capacity
Thanks to its high hourly capacity of 2990 people (compared to 1200 before 2007), the current infrastructure helps avoid long queues, even during peak tourist seasons.
